LVAG “Seascapes or Sandscapes” Online Art Gallery Show
18 LVAG artist members particpated in the “Seascapes or Sandscapes” Online Art Gallery Show.
In this Online Art Gallery Show the artist is asked to choose or create an art piece that reveals the ocean and / or the ocean shorelines. Seascapes and sandscapes are related, both referring to depictions of the sea and its coastal surroundings. A seascape is a broader term that can include any representation of the ocean, while a sandscape focuses on the sandy shorelines, the area where the sea meets the land. The ocean is essential for life on Earth, harboring most of the planet's animals, and producing a significant portion of Earth's atmospheric oxygen. Shorelines are important as well. They are vital to the health and stability of the ocean, acting as a dynamic interface between land and sea. Shorelines are also important for human activities, including recreation, tourism, and commercial industries.
A total of 55 beautiful works of art have been submitted.

Beca Allsop "Ocean Aglow" Oil 20"x20" $1150 Artwork Description “Ocean Aglow” began with an acrylic underpainting, then grew through layers of oil. I’ve always been drawn to the Crimson Sun over the sea and worked to capture that glow within the crest of a wave.

Beca Allsop "Sunrise Glow" Oil 14"x18" $650 Artwork Description The painting came alive through layered oils, highlighted with a touch of texture in the waves.

Beca Allsop "Waveform" Oil 23 1/2 x 23 1/2" $800 Artwork Description At 23.6 inches in diameter, “Waveform” was created on a round wood panel that sparked the idea of a wave in motion. Layers of brushwork and palette knife strokes give it the rich texture of the sea.

Tumultuous Shoreline is a one-of-a-kind mosaic artwork capturing the raw beauty of land meeting sea in a moment of swirling energy and shifting elements.
Kelan Carrigan "4 Hours From Phoenix" Oil 24 x 48 NFS Artwork Description Some might consider this more of a sunset painting, but I thought this oil painting would be perfect for the sea and sand-scape exhibition. The silhouette of the palms on the sky brings you right to the beach. Just a few steps and your feet are in the sand. This painting was made for my Mom, in memory of one of her favorite places in visit in Mexico.....it also happens to be only a four hour drive from Phoenix. High quality prints of any size are available!

Karen Fusco "Patagonia Dream" Acrylic 30 x 15 $600 Artwork Description Majestic, sharp-edged mountains rise dramatically against a cloudy sky, their rich blue hues contrasting with the snowy glaciers sitting at the southern edge of the continent. A small boat with people glides across a tranquil turquoise ocean in the foreground, surrounded by lush green hills.
Karen Fusco "Restful Afternoon" Acrylic 24 x 36 NFS Artwork Description Come sit out on this deck with your glass of wine, overlooking your beautiful tropical escape along the ocean's edge. Calm waves lap at the shoreline and a light breeze makes the afternoon perfect.
Hyrum Huskey "Path to the Beach" Watercolor 8 x 10 NFS Artwork Description This watercolor artwork submission met the theme by combining both sand and sea. I was inspired to paint it as a scene that would draw forth a personal memory of almost any viewer who has tromped across a similar path to a beach.

Charles Jiao "Boats on the Bay" Oil 12x12 $480 Artwork Description This piece focuses on the quiet solitude of two boats resting on a sandy shore. The gentle light of the sun casts long, deep shadows, emphasizing the worn textures and rustic character of the boats. The brushstrokes are deliberate and expressive, capturing the subtle variations in color from the weathered hulls to the bright, sun-drenched sand. The simple, peaceful composition highlights the boats' stories and their connection to the sea. This painting is a tribute to the peaceful moments on the coast, celebrating the sandscape as a place of rest and a crucial connection between the sea and human life.

Charles Jiao "Pacific's Edge" Oil 24x36 $2900 Artwork Description This painting captures a dramatic moment along the coastline, where the rugged cliffs meet the powerful Pacific Ocean. The composition contrasts the turbulent, deep blue waves with the solid, textured formations of the shoreline. The soft light of a fading day illuminates the scene, highlighting the interplay between the cool, misty air and the warm tones of the coastal rocks and vegetation. The breaking wave in the foreground serves as a focal point, drawing the eye into the dynamic energy of the sea. This piece explores the enduring relationship between the vast, moving ocean and the unyielding stability of the land, celebrating the raw, untamed beauty of nature.

Charles Jiao "Rhythm of the Coast" Oil 29x40 $3900 Artwork Description This painting presents a tranquil view of La Jolla Cove, balancing the immense scale of the ocean with the intimate details of the shoreline. The waves, rendered in shades of turquoise and white, roll gently toward the shore, creating a soft, inviting rhythm. The cliffs and coastal buildings are bathed in a serene, hazy light, suggesting a calm day by the sea. The piece focuses on the intersection of the sandscape and the seascape, showing how the land provides a sheltered space where people can enjoy the ocean. It captures the essence of a peaceful beach day, celebrating the harmonious relationship between the human-inhabited shore and the vast, open sea.

Amanda Kettler "Foamy Waves" Oil 30 x 40 $3,600 Artwork Description This is an oil painting. I used my usual style of starting the piece at the top left and working right and down just like how you read a page in a book. I slowly built it up in layers. I used a subtle impasto of cold wax mixed with a small amount of paint to create the texture in the waves as well as the translucent effect of the foam and water. I had painted the whole bottom third of the piece brown , used napkins to blot the paint to create subtle sand texture, and then used the cold wax/paint mixture again just a bit thinner and in different patterns to create the feeling of the water rushing back down the slope to join the rest of the water in the sea. I used my fingers to apply the cold wax/paint mixture to get the varying smooth and bubbly textures. It reflects sandscapes because of how sand performs when it it wet by showing the darker areas where water has touched it, and the lighter areas where it is dry. The photo doesn't show how I created the bottom third to be slightly glossy to look wet.

Amanda Kettler "Fort Story, Virginia" Oil 20 x 24 $1,500 Artwork Description I used oil paint for this piece. I applied it very thinly in the sky to emulate how thin our atmosphere is. I start every painting with thin washes and then build it thicker with each layer. The sand texture on the bottom left was created by applying real sand that I had obtained at that very beach. Sometimes I use paint from a beach I travel to in my paintings. I also used incense ash in the sand area, and that is what the light grayish areas are.

Amanda Kettler "Just Before Sunrise" Mixed Media 48 x 48 $7,000 Artwork Description I used oil paint for the whole thing. I used my dad's old army shirts and two different types of paper to sculpt the clouds in the sky which is what gives it the texture. I used an old tablecloth to create the water texture, and I used paper that I handmade out of a variety of old shredded and blended paper stuff, and used my paper press to create the bottom sand texture area. I think this piece is a good example of seascapes and sandscapes because it shows the reflective quality of water, waves gently rolling in that create peace, and the texture in the paper/sand represents all of the footsteps of the people that walked through it while also reflecting the colors of the sky.

Amanda Kettler "The Oregon Coast in October" Oil 22 x 28 $1,900 Artwork Description I used thin layers of oil paint for this, especially with the tree and mist area- lots of blending. The brown hill on the right has a subtle impasto for texture variance. Also, the two white waves on the bottom left have a subtle impasto that I use to create a feeling of atmospheric perspective/ dimensionality. I like to create how foamy waves look and feel to me. This reflects the theme of sandscapes because of how the sand is darker where it it wet and lighter where it is dry. I also used subtle complementary colors where the clouds are slightly blue which contrasts with the very warm (yet not orange) sand. This helped the piece not be too cold feeling. I had never seen an ocean have slightly green water and it was so pretty with the bright white sea foam. The waves were rolling in steadily and sort of quickly yet smooth and gentle. I was in awe so I knew I had to paint this day.
Thomas Knapp "Hidden View" Photography 32"x48 $3000 Artwork Description Sea caves carved over the years by the constant ebb and flow of the ocean have a mystical lure. While they may offer shelter they can also pose a danger! The unique view from a sea cave gives you a very different perspective and evokes an air of mystery of the seascape you are viewing.
Thomas Knapp "Sculpted Sands" Photography " 30"x44" $2600 Artwork Description The almost constant winds along the coast of Oregon create an ever-changing sandscape. The late afternoon clouds and ever-present fog bank lingering off the coast adds to the unique beauty on a late Summer day.
Thomas Knapp "Seagrass and Shelter" Photography 32"x48" $3000 Artwork Description The windswept seashore of coastal Oregon provides a plentiful supply of driftwood. Beachgoers use the supplies provided by Mother Nature to build shelters to offer a modicum of protection. Eventually, the sea reclaims the bounty it lent to its visitors.
Thomas Knapp "Stroll at Dawn" Photography 32"x48" $3000 Artwork Description Low tide at dawn glistens in the early light as a beachgoer strolls among the towering outcroppings of rock. A pallet of vibrant colors shimmer on the wet sand as the tide recedes.
Thomas Knapp "The Skeleton" Photography 48"x32" $3000 Mother Nature used her unique skills to create the appearance of a whale skeleton comprised of pieces of driftwood along a windswept beach.

Suann Lester "Maui - Sand, Rocks and Surf" Photography NFS Artwork Description This image is Maui, HI. From the sand, volcanic rocks and to the ocean are representative of life. Bobbie Maxvill "Jumping Orcas" Ceramics 8 x 8 x 0.25 NFS Artwork Description Inspired by the orcas of the Pacific Northwest, I created this art piece on an 8”x8” ceramic tile. In the Pacific Northwest culture, orcas are symbols of family, community, and protection. They are also symbols of luck, compassion, and romance and in this art piece they are breaching from the ocean. Many family vacations are planned with hopes to see such a show from a pod of orcas.
Bobbie Maxvill "Night and Day" Ceramics 6 x 6 x 0.25 NFS Artwork Description My art was inspired because of a family outing to the beach. Our small family played all day and then slept in the camper that night, but not before we looked up at the stars. After I created my design for my sun and moon I traced it onto a 6”x6” terra cotta tile. I was then ready to create my art piece using the Cuerda Seca technique.
Bobbie Maxvill "Tropical Fish" Ceramics 6 x 6 x 0.25 NFS Artwork Description My Tropical Fish was created after a trip to an aquarium. After I created my design for my Tropical Fish I traced it onto a 6”x6” terra cotta tile. I was then ready to create my art piece using the Cuerda Seca technique.
Bobbie Maxvill "Playing at the Beach" Ceramics 4 x 52.25 x 0.25 NFS Artwork Description My inspiration for this peace was a childhood beach trip memory. I drew a picture combining many of the fun experiences from the trip and divided it into 7 squares. I was then ready to create my art piece using the Cuerda Seca technique. I use this technique on all my tiles. I traced my 7 drawings on 7 – 4” terra cotta tiles and then applied black marking pen over each traced line.

Jennifer Stephens "La Riva del Mare" Photography 11x14 $100 Artwork Description While visiting my lifelong best friend in Italy, I happened upon two (presumably) locals sitting quietly in the cool shadows of a historic stone archway. The men gazed out over a vibrant seashore bustling with tourists enjoying the warm sun and the inviting blue sea. The contrast between the peaceful, shaded spot and the lively beach scene highlights the blend of everyday life with tourism on the island. They seemed to be taking a moment of calm reflection, observing the colorful crowd, happy swimmers, and the glorious horizon. The sparkling turquoise water meets the golden sand, creating a picturesque backdrop that embodies Sicily's natural beauty. This scene portrays not only the charm of the coastal seascape, but also the subtle coexistence of tradition, history, and modern leisure. In that quiet moment, I saw the island's essence: timeless, tender, and richly layered. A place where locals and travelers share the same sun-drenched shore— each experiencing it differently, yet bound by the beauty and meaning they behold together.
Jennifer Stephens "Seaside Drummer" Photography 14x11 $100 Artwork Description In this black and white photograph, a man is captured mid-performance, playing a drum set positioned on the seashore of a tropical island. The ocean stretches behind him, calm yet infinite. Swaying palm trees, rustling sea oats and grainy sands align with the metallic shine of cymbals. The absence of an audience documents an intimate communion between rhythm, solitude and expression-a bold act of creation amidst nature's raw canvas. He is both performer and a part of this unexpected experience. Although the dissonance of setting could make the artist and his drum feel out of place, this scene feels deeply personal and profound to me. I feel blessed to have partaken in such a precious moment, in which sound and silence, man and nature, artistry and backdrop existed in such sweet harmony alongside this breathtaking seashore. The photograph encapsulates the soul of island life where music is not confined to stages or studios; it breathes in open spaces, shaped by artists, land and sea. A union of rhythm and nature, reflecting how life flows in sync with its surrounding shores-unpredictable, beautiful, and deeply connected to something greater than itself.
Jennifer Stephens "Where the Ocean Meets the Sky" Photography 14 x 11" $100 Artwork Description This vibrant photograph bursts with the radiance of a perfect ocean day, where the crystal-clear blue water stretches playfully into the sky, blending with white clouds to form a dreamy, infinite horizon. A sea so clear you can see through to the soft, sandy bottom; where gentle ripples create beautiful patterns like nature's very own art! Sunlight sparkles across the surface, casting shimmering reflections that dance like glitter on the water…(and I love Glitter!) The scene is bright, refreshing, and full of life; a celebration of summer freedom and the raw happiness that comes with salty air and open skies. There's truly a magic in the way the sea and sky seem to harmonize together. To me, this image reveals more than just a stunning view-it captures the peaceful, uplifting spirit of the seashore at a truly dazzling moment. That's a beautiful feeling, like being gently swept away by the sheer wonder of the world around us, from grand landscapes to tiny details.

Matthew Szostek "Eye of the Storm" Oil 30 x 24 $450 Artwork Description This painting is oil on canvas. I went to the beach in Ventura California and I noticed a young lady running to the waves then running away from the small waves coming to the shore so she would't get wet. I thought it was cute and funny. So I decided to paint that idea when I saw a picture of the eye nebula from the Hubble telescope. I thought it would be cool to paint the eye nebula coming from space and the young lady seeing it would stop like she did when the waves were coming to her feet. I was raised in Ventura county where this beach front is and loved and respect the ocean. The ocean is definitely a frontier like outer space with creatures and areas we haven't even seen or touched, just like the cosmos.
