  • ARTIST STATEMENT

With a foundation in textile arts, garment design, and a wide range of creative disciplines, my journey has naturally evolved into mosaic art—where all my skills, stories, and emotions converge.

In 2024, my artistic path took a profound turn following the loss of my son, Scott, a talented tattoo Artist whose work lives on through those who wear his designs. His passing has deeply impacted my creative voice, inspiring not only my work but also reigniting the artistic spark in his brother.
Mosaic art has become both a tribute and a form of healing. My first major piece in this medium—a large mosaic table—depicts the spiritual world I imagine for Scott, capturing both light and darkness, day and night.

Through my art, I honor his memory and aim to support others who struggle with depression, PTSD, and addiction. A portion of my proceeds will go toward organizations working in those spaces, because awareness is the first step to healing.

In 2025, I was honored to receive 2nd place in the LVAG “Life in the Desert “ competition, and currently have two pieces selected for inclusion in an upcoming curated exhibition At the Sonoran Art Society in Carefree Arizona.

An additional piece Girl with balloons is currently on display at the Sonoran Art League.
LVAG also accepted my seascape piece for their Sandscapes or Seascapes 2025 Show. I’m grateful to receive the 1st place award for 3D artwork.

Waiting for my next meal Wild Cat piece artwork has been selected by the jury for the 4th annual Kingdom Animalia 2025, Exhibizone’s international exhibition, promotion, and sales opportunity celebrating the beauty, diversity, and symbolism of the animal world—real, mythical, and imagined. Your submission stood out among an exceptional field of works—this is your moment to share your vision with the world.

These milestones reflect not only recognition of my work, but also the deep personal journey behind it. Art is no longer just a passion—it’s my purpose, my therapy, and my message of resilience.

As an avid landscape and wildlife photographer, I am driven by a passion to share the breathtaking beauty of the natural world with those who may not have the opportunity to witness it firsthand. Each photograph is a fleeting moment captured in a split second, a delicate interplay of light, shadow, and form that reveals the intricate artistry of nature. My lens seeks out the hidden elegance in petals, leaves, and the untamed grace of wildlife, showcasing vibrant hues and intricate structures that often go unnoticed.

As a child, in the 1950’s and 1960’s, I took many years of art lessons under the direction of fine artists Aida and Dan Whedon in Port Washington, NY. I studied art while in high school and participated in many an art project for my two daughters while they were in school. Lots of scenery was designed and painted for shows, recitals and proms.

As life was progressing, my talents and creativity were directed into custom computer programming and analysis, which (believe it or not) was a very creative outlet for me. And fine art was put aside, temporarily, for quite a long time.

Now I am retired and have redirected my energies back into creating fine art pieces. I began in 2016 with drawing lessons from Tommy Tucker at the City Lights Art Gallery in Henderson, NV. Here I produced charcoal and pastel works of art and found my passion again.

In 2017 I began working in acrylics under the direction of Amelia Jan Bennett, my wonderful and inspiring teacher, who guided me as I learned and grew as an artist.

In May, 2017, my first ever piece submitted was accepted into the Celebrating Life Art Exhibit in Las Vegas, NV and I was proud to have my acrylic work entitled ‘By the Shore’ displayed through July 17th, 2017. I have had paintings displayed in two subsequent Celebrating Life Art Exhibits: ‘Serene Autumn’ in 2018 and ‘Lake Mead Cove’ in 2019. In 2022, I had my ‘Zion in Spring’ painting in a Southwestern Art exhibit in Las Vegas. In 2024, my painting ‘As Night Descends in the Desert’ was awarded 2nd Place in Brush Art at the Mesquite Fine Arts Center.

I have continued painting in acrylics since that time, fully enjoying the experience and working on many projects. Over the years my paintings have been displayed at the Henderson Bridge Club, Las Vegas Bridge World, Skimos Coffee Shop and at the Las Vegas Artists Guild location in the Galleria Mall. Currently I am displaying at City Lights Art Gallery in Henderson, The Bridge Center of Las Vegas, Boulder City Artist Guild Gallery, Boulder City Hospital, Boulder City Library and the Hoover Dam Lodge. I also participate and display frequently at the Mesquite Fine Arts Center (Mesquite, NV) and the Kingman Center for the Arts (Kingman, AZ).

You can view my collection of acrylic works at karenfusco.com.

Creating fine art makes me smile.

Hyrum retired from various former lives as a military officer, a counselor, a community college Student Services Dean, and a public transit manager. After officially retiring, Hyrum began studying watercolor painting in earnest and now spends his days obsessing over the next painting or workshop attendance opportunity. He also collects way too many painting books from used bookstores!

Hyrum is a Signature Member of the Nevada Watercolor Society, and a member of the National Watercolor Society, the Arizona Watercolor Association, and the Red Rock Pastel Society. His home studio is in Las Vegas.

Occasionally, Hyrum still travels the back roads of the United States to simply learn more, paint, and blog some of his experiences along life’s road. He believes that life should be about love and compassion---learning to be a human being.

  • Charles Jiao’s Bio: Growing up in China during the Cultural Revolution, Charles Jiao’s early education was frequently disrupted. To ensure his time wasn’t wasted, his father arranged private tutoring from family friends including an artist who brought him into the art world. After graduating high school in 1973, Jiao spent two years farming under government mandate before securing a position as a department store designer, a role made possible by his early art training.

Following the end of the Cultural Revolution in 1976, Jiao entered Xiamen University to study chemistry and later became a lecturer in his hometown. In 1986, he left China to pursue graduate studies in the United States, earning a Master of Science from the University of Minnesota–Duluth and a PhD in chemistry from Purdue University. While advancing in science, he never left art behind, continuing his artistic development through two years of private watercolor instruction.

A chemist position with a government contractor for the Air Force Research Laboratory brought Jiao to Dayton, Ohio, where he transitioned to oil painting and deepened his practice while working full time. In 2019, he retired from chemistry and embraced painting as his full-time vocation.

Jiao has been a member of the Oil Painters of America, a Signature Member of the Cincinnati Art Club, and a member of the Dayton Society of Artists. His work has been exhibited in numerous juried exhibitions, including the Oil Painters of America 2021 Salon Show, ViewPoint 54 National Exhibition, and the Olde Masters Galleria 2023 International Spring Exhibition. He has received multiple awards for his work, which often draws from his personal history and a disciplined creative process.

He is currently represented by Eisele Gallery in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Olde Masters Galleria in Dayton, Ohio. His work, ranging from intimate 12"x12" pieces to monumental 48"x72" canvases, has been collected nationwide.

Artist Statement: Practicing both oil painting and photography has helped me clarify the unique role each medium plays in how we perceive the world. I believe photography seeks the finest clarity—a faithful rendering of form and detail. Painting, by contrast, engages a different aesthetic truth. As a renowned Chinese painter once said, “The beauty of painting lies between the like and the not-like.” Too lifelike becomes servile; too unlike becomes dishonest. This poetic paradox has become a guiding principle in my artistic journey.

My work exists along the spectrum that stretches from hyperrealism to pure

abstraction. I consider myself a realist painter, yet one who embraces abstract brushwork. I paint scenes from everyday life—quiet corners, fleeting moments, familiar streets—and seek to elevate them through expressive handling of paint. The abstraction in my brushstrokes isn’t there to obscure, but to suggest, to evoke, and to invite the viewer into a more active, imaginative engagement with the image.

Though my work is rooted in realism, I am equally inspired by the achievements of artists across the spectrum—from those who master fine detail to those who reduce form to pure emotion. I am always exploring, always learning, always walking the line between the visible and the felt.

Why I want to be an artist: Art entered my life early and never truly left. Even during years devoted to science, I returned to painting in spare moments—sketching landscapes, contemplating compositions, and searching through literature for answers to a timeless question: What makes a painting truly resonate?

Shapes matter, of course, but more essential are value structure—the orchestration of light and dark, color harmony, and the quality of edges. These elements captivate the eye, often before we consciously register why. I believe this attraction is ancient, embedded in human evolution. Unlike many jungle-dwelling animals with sharper vision, early humans relied less on crisp detail and more on overall patterns of tone, color, and edge to sense danger or opportunity. That inherited sensitivity still guides our visual experience today.

What kinds of patterns stir the human eye remains a mystery—one that reveals itself only through deep engagement. As I’ve immersed myself in painting, I’ve discovered that the world looks different through an artist’s eyes. A casual observer might pass by a scene without notice, while I may pause—drawn by the quiet drama of a strong value structure, the muted hues of atmospheric perspective, or the subtle dance of edges that hint at form and texture.

To be an artist is to see what others overlook. It is to search for beauty embedded in the everyday—nature’s quiet poetry—and to share it through a visual language as old as humankind. That pursuit, that shared wonder, is why I chose to become an artist.

  • ARTIST- A career in law enforcement, that included extensive crime scene forensic photography, played a significant role in expanding Tom’s photographic evolution. Growing up on a farm in New Hampshire and later the orange groves of Florida fostered a love of animals, nature and the great outdoors. Many trips, vacations and friendly contests to take the best picture further helped to develop the foundational skills necessary for him to take memorable and timeless photographs.

A desire to diversify and expose himself to new challenges led Tom to accept and develop a wide variety of photographic endeavors. He shot location still photographs for The Travel Channel. Exotic car shots for Motor Trend magazine. Event photography including the “Property Brothers” (Jonathan & Drew Scott). Photos for “Word River” international literary journal, Nevada Magazine and the Nevada Travel Guide. Commercial photography for the “Skywalk” restaurant at the Grand Canyon, Zak Bagans’ The Haunted Museum and other medical, dental and commercial clients. He continues to expand his local, state and international clientele.

While Tom’s interest in photography continues to explore new subjects, his love of nature and landscapes remain his favorite subjects. Tom is particularly interested in capturing the beauty and majesty of Nevada’s endangered wildlife, including wild horses, burros, big horn sheep and other flora and fauna he encounters on his travels.

Tom and his wife, Nancy, live in Las Vegas and have called Nevada home since 1994.

Suann Lester has been a maker since childhood. At age 10, she attended her first outdoor art show and was struck by a jolt of recognition—an awakening that whispered, “If I could only do that, I would be doing something special.” That transformative moment has fueled her creative journey ever since.

Her first creative outlet was photography, setting up a home darkroom with the help of her parents as a teenager. In college, although math and science came easily, Suann always found her way back to making with her hands—earning a Bachelor of Arts in General Art Studies, where she discovered a love for ceramics and printmaking.

Today, from her Las Vegas studio, Suann is expanding her practice through drawing, while also hand-building and throwing porcelain ceramic pieces that invite touch and daily use. Her pots, tiles, and platters carry her love for surface detail—brought to life through sgraffito carving and crystalline glazes. She draws inspiration from nature, community, and landscapes.

For Suann, making is both art and meditation. She finds joy in the rhythm of the wheel, the patience of carving, and the surprise of opening a kiln.

This year, she has challenged herself to move past the fear of drawing—using it as a tool for growth across every medium she explores, and bravely beginning to share her drawings and paintings with others. With this renewed focus on drawing has come a deeper understanding of its foundational and transformational role in learning to see clearly. Beyond her own practice, Suann has been a longtime member of the Nevada Clay Guild, serving for several years as a board member and active volunteer.

Her hope is simple: that each piece she creates brings warmth, beauty, and a spark of joy into the homes and hands of others.

My journey into photography began 39 years ago when my dad handed me his old Pentax camera. It had a built-in analog light meter and a weight that felt important in my hands. From that moment, I was hooked. What started as curiosity quickly evolved into a lifelong passion. I was especially drawn to the magic of the darkroom—developing film, mixing chemicals, and printing images onto a variety of papers. That process led me to explore alternative photographic techniques and hand-coloring black and white prints, which remain central to my artistic expression.

I earned my Associate of Arts degree in photography from The Art Institute, graduating with honors. Over the years, my work has continued to evolve, but the heart of it remains the same: a deep appreciation for the quiet beauty in everyday moments and the power of capturing them with intention. Photography, for me, is not just a medium; it’s a mindset and a way of being. I work primarily in fine art and alternative processes, blending traditional techniques with personal vision.

My photographs have been featured in galleries and online exhibitions throughout the U.S. Iwon the summer bookmark contest for Judy Blume’s bookstore in Key West, FL and recently got chosen for publication in a South Florida magazine. Yay!!
