My painting was inspired by a photo I took in the desert by Nelson, NV. I’m imagining how a sheep might see his path home… safety at the top of the mountain.

Artists Statement:
The brain is one of the largest, most fascinating organs in the human body. Though it is widely studied there are still many unanswered questions. One of them being, “what causes depression?”
There are several theories about the cause, but there is no definite answer. The most likely theory is results from abnormal Brain chemistry. Researchers continue to study the intricate mechanisms of this organ in hopes of finding an explanation for these complexities. In this painting I show the inner workings of my depressed brain. Trying to simplify the world in black and white, but realizing that it is more complicated than that. Here I am trying to comprehend the world around me with damaged neurotransmitters. Unable to keep me balanced, unable to regulate my mood. Stricken with profound melancholy. However there is a curious beauty about something so small, so powerful, so misconceived as the human brain. I find solace in knowing that something so misunderstood is also just as wonderful. It gives me hope that as a misunderstood being, I too could possess the same wonder.

This is one of the Virginia Lakes in Mono County, California. It is an incredibly beautiful basin of lakes, in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, I visited with my husband a Swiss ski professional and avid backcountry skier. He skied and I painted right next to an amazing fire, the smell of woodsmoke was delightful!! The bright morning sun felt great (after waking up to 12 degree temperatures!!) and I loved how and where it struck the hill highlighting the tracks of skiers exiting their backcountry experience, lots of tracks from happy skiers, most of them Covid front line medical personnel with a rare day off!!

Prior to having my drawing students render a paper bag from life, I decided to give it a try first. When some of the folds slightly resembled facial features, I saw an opportunity to take it in a different direction.

Sterling silver wire wrapped Sonora Sunset stone pendant, hangs on a 20″ (inch) Sterling silver chain with a secure lobster clasp
This unique silver necklace features a Sonora Sunset stone, wire wrapped in Sterling silver wire by hand. Pieces of wire curl their way around the perimeter of the stone. The bail is an extension of the wire wrapping.
The lovely red/ orange stone is made of Chrysocolla (which gives it bits of blue, green and gray), Cuprite (which gives it its red color), Chalcotricite (which gives it its orangey color), and iron (which gives it bits of black). The high copper content of the component stones helps it to be an excellent healer. The stone is believed to bring calm to the emotions and help to deal with fears, past trauma and anxiety. Native American cultures have used it to cure the throat and lungs, and bring peace in times of stress. The stone is also called Sonora Sunrise, Sonoran Sunset and Sonora Sunset.
Measurements: The stone is about 1.3″ (inches) across the center at its widest part, and 1.75″ (inches) high. The total pendant, including the bail on top and all silver wire, is 1.5″ (inches) across and 2.25″ (inches) high. All measurements are approximate.

This is a 36″ x 48″ piece painted with an impasto (thick paint) technique. I have always been attracted to the famous self portrait painting by Gustave Courbet called The Desperate Man.It is my take on the image with Courbet coming out of the universe desperate yet again. In these times of new challenges, we are reminded that, although frustrating we will get through this.

I came upon this motif in Kanab Utah during the mid days of Covid the off-the-grid travel experience…all of us getting out in our RVs!! When I saw this rusty yet colorful pair languishing at a chaotic tow yard, the name came to my mind “Growing Old Together”!! (I myself being married some 40 years!!) I am sooo glad they have each other!! Thank you for letting me be a part of your life through my art!!!
